Halloween puppets

My kids love playing with little puppets. They just end up igniting so much imagination!

Today, we are making Halloween puppets!

These are cute little puppets that are roughly the size of finger puppets, but we put them on popsicle sticks instead.

And they are all spooky (but still cute) Halloween monsters!

We even made a little haunted house we made for our Halloween monster puppets to live in!

The best part of all… we made printable templates that we are giving you for free! Fun right!

We thought so at least.

Supplies You’ll Need for These Halloween Puppets

  • Colored craft papers
  • 1 Sheet of Black Cardstock paper
  • Popsicle sticks
  • Googly eyes
  • Pencil
  • Sharpie
  • Scissors
  • Craft glue

How to Make These Halloween Puppets

To make your halloween puppets, simply trace and cut out all of the template shapes, put together and add your googley eyes and popsicle sticks.

We’ll show you exactly how in this step by step tutorial.

Step 1: Trace Out and Cut the Halloween Puppet Templates

Select your colored craft papers for the Halloween characters from the provided template. We used some basic Halloween colors like green, orange, purple and black and white. Plus a bit of pink, brown and red.

Our Halloween Puppet template includes

  • A Ghost Puppet
  • A Cat Puppet
  • A Bat Puppet
  • A Spider Puppet
  • A Witch Puppet
  • A Dracula Puppet
  • A Frankenstein Puppet

Let’s start with the easy patterns.

Trace the ghost, bat and cat patterns on the selected craft papers and cut them out carefully.

With younger kids, you can cut out the pieces and let them assemble them.

With really young kids, I suggest you put them together and let them just have all the fun playing with the puppets.

Step 2: Piecing Together Your Puppets

To make your ghost puppet, simply attach googley eyes and draw a mouth using a black pen or sharpie.

For the bat puppet, attach the body cutout and secure it to the center of the wing pattern. Attach googly eyes and draw a mouth and attach the bat fangs to complete the bat puppet.

For the cat puppet, attach the belly and nose pieces of the template on to the cat’s body. Draw a mouth and attach a set of googly eyes to finish of the cat.

They should look like the photo below.

Step 3: Attach the Popsicle Sticks

Now, to make the cutout figures actual puppets, attach the paper ghost, bat and cat to a few popsicle sticks.

Step 4: Starting the Witch Puppet

Now let’s make one of the more difficult halloween puppets, the witch!

Print out the puppet templates for the witch and trace them on colored craft papers.

We used black paper for the dress and hat, green for the head and hands, orange for the hair and purple for the stripe of the hat.

Cut out the traced patterns like shown below.

Step 5: Attaching the pieces

Attach the strip on the witch puppets hat, head on the bottom side (straight side) of the hair and the hands-on both sides of the dress pattern.

Your witch puppet should start looking something like this:

Step 6: Continuing the Witch Puppet

Now, attach the witch’s head to the top her dress and then attach the hat on the top side of the head to complete the paper witch puppet’s base.

Step 7: Finishing the Witch Puppet

Now attach googly eyes to your witch puppet and use the black sharpie or pen to draw her a nose and a mouth.

Finally, attach the paper witch with a popsicle stick to complete the witch puppet.

Isn’t she cute!

Step 9: Making the Puppets Haunted House

To make your puppets a fun haunted house, trace and cut out the house pattern on a black cardstock paper.
